European Chips Act

The European Chips Act (ECA) is a legislative initiative of the European Union aimed at increasing Europe's competitiveness and resilience in the field of semiconductor technology. In response to severe semiconductor shortages that have triggered the global market crisis, ECA aims to strengthen Europe's position as a global leader in advanced chip manufacturing and safeguard the independence of supply chains.

Main objectives and provisions of the European Chips Act

  1. Increase in production capacity: ECA aims to double the European Union's semiconductor production capacity by 2030. The adoption of the Act responds to the urgent need to build up Europe's capacity to design, manufacture and package advanced chips, thereby reducing dependence on external imports.
  2. Financial support for investments: The act provides financial guarantees for investments in the semiconductor sector, aimed at the development of technology and production infrastructure. This is a key element of the strategy to support innovation and economic growth in the context of the digital and green transition.
  3. Supply Chain Regulations: ECA specifies measures to monitor and secure semiconductor supply chains. Ensuring stability and security of supply is key to maintaining production continuity in the face of global challenges.

BSP's involvement in shaping the European Chips Act

Business & Science Poland actively participated in the ECA consultations, representing the interests of Polish companies and scientific institutions. The organisation has called for effective legislative measures that can help address the semiconductor shortage in the EU and strengthen Europe's position in the global technology sector.

Summary

The European Chips Act (ECA) is a key step by the European Union in building a solid foundation for the semiconductor industry. The Act not only focuses on technological development and innovation, but also on enhancing Europe's digital sovereignty and strategic independence. With ECA, Europe has the chance to build a strong, competitive and resilient digital economy ready to meet the challenges of the 21st century.
