#BSP_Statement- Gas Package

April 12, 2022

The EU has set itself the goal of becoming the first climate-neutral continent by 2050 (European Green Deal) — it has agreed to cut greenhouse gas emissions by at least 55% by 2030 (“Fit for 55” package).

Published on 15 December 2021 by the European Commission, the package of legislative proposals on hydrogen consists of:

  • Directives on common rules for the internal markets in renewable gases and natural gas and hydrogen
  • Regulations on the internal markets in renewable gases and natural gas and hydrogen

The Hydrogen and Low Emission Gas Package supports the European Green Deal and its main objective is to establish a hydrogen market, create an appropriate environment for investment and enable the development of special infrastructure, including trade with non-EU countries, and create conditions for the transition from fossil natural gas to renewable and low-carbon gases, in particular biomethane and hydrogen, and to strengthen the resilience of the system of course.

The European Commission's proposals were the subject of a consultation process by the European Commission, in which Bussines and Science took an active part. In the next step, the European Commission will draw up a summary of all opinions received and then present them to the European Parliament and the Council as a contribution to the legislative debate.
